Falls Church, Va., July 5, 2007 - The Data Interchange Standards Association (DISA), a not-for-profit organization that supports the development of cross-industry electronic data interchange (EDI) standards, awarded the Earl J. Bass e-Business Achievement Award to Donald Bechtel, Standards and Regulatory Manager for Siemens Medical Solutions, USA. This award recognizes outstanding accomplishments and leadership in support of the development and use of EDI standards and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) messages over the past year.

As a distinguished standards expert well-versed in data exchange standards, processes, and technologies, Mr. Bechtel is currently serving his second term as co-chair of ASC X12ís Healthcare Task Group of the Insurance Subcommittee. The Healthcare Task Group is responsible for the development and maintenance of many administrative and financial transactions used in the healthcare industry.

He is also the primary ASC X12 representative to the Designated Standards Maintenance Organization (DSMO), which is responsible for managing the HIPAA standards development process.

Mr. Bechtel is the primary ASC X12 representative to the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and is a member of its Board of Directors. The mission of HITSP is to serve as a cooperative partnership between the public and private sectors tasked to enhance the interoperability of healthcare software applications.

Mr. Bechtel is very active in the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) and he serves on its Board of Directors. WEDIís core mission is to improve the quality of healthcare through effective and efficient information exchange and management.

Created in 2006, the first-ever Earl J. Bass e-Business Achievement Award was presented to June Arnold of BNSF Railway Company and Lisa Shreve of SysCom Strategies, Inc. Earl J. Bass, known as "Buddy," was the principal author of the first set of EDI standards manuals based on input from transportation industry work groups. As a technologist, perhaps Buddy's most significant contribution to EDI is the coded syntax notes used to unambiguously describe the conditional requirements of data elements within a segment. As former chair of ASC X12, Buddy was instrumental in securing the U.S. role in the international EDI community.
