Falls Church, VA, March 23, 2009 – The Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12 has signed a charter to participate in the Standards Charter Organization (SCO), a formal collaboration among U.S. health care standards development organizations (SDO) to support industry-wide standardization and interoperability.

The SCO facilitates the coordination and collaboration of enhanced harmonization among diverse SDO in health data acquisition, processing and handling systems and recognizes multi-industry stakeholder implications. It serves as a forum to communicate and coordinate with the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) and facilitates a unified representation of standards, not intended to supersede any member’s existing coordination with the US TAG.

“The ASC X12 is eager to participate in the substantive effort of creating interoperable standards that will support efficient use of U.S. health care information technology (HIT). The SCO provides an environment for senior U.S. health care standards development community leadership to meet strategically to reduce health care costs through effective standards use,” said Dan Kazzaz, Chair, ASC X12. “X12 brings leadership in harmonizing cross industry business technologies and infrastructure and believes that savings accrue from improving productivity. Reducing the differences between the standards and creating harmonization will ease the challenge of required integration.”

Charter members include the Secretariat, National Council for Prescription Drug Programs National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), and Health Level Seven (HL7), ASTM International and Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC). Other standards-related entities and formal observers include Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Federal Health Architecture (FHA), Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), Social Security Administration (SSA) and US TAG.
