Falls Church, VA, January 12, 2010 – The Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12 announced that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Implementation Guide Interpretation Requests (HIR) portal found at http://www.x12n.org/portal/ is the definitive solution to 005010 standards interpretations.

The portal is a Web-based service where health care providers, plans and clearinghouses can get answers to questions regarding the new HIPAA-related electronic data interchange (EDI) standard for claims, remittances and eligibility from the standards authors. Anyone seeking interpretations of the ASC X12 005010 standard is encouraged to search the repository for additional information before submitting new requests for a formal or informal response from ASC X12.

The portal serves as the number one, go-to place to research questions that have been asked about the ASC X12 005010 standard. This is critically important, as health plans, health care clearinghouses and health care providers migrate to the Federally-mandated 005010 standard for processing transactions.

It provides access to information about existing versions of ASC X12N Implementation Guides (IG) named as HIPAA standards and ASC X12 Technical Reports, Type 3 (TR3s) related to Health Care, in the form of search and retrieval of previous HIPAA IG HIRs and their associated responses.

Answers from the portal are helpful for healthcare entities to share with trading partners. For example, if a doctor or health care provider has a question about the standard format of a claim, they can use the portal to search for clarification on the standard and then revise the claim submission.

“The repository of interpretations posted in the portal at http://www.x12n.org/portal/Search.asp is instrumental in helping healthcare entities make a successful migration to the ASC X12 005010 standard, mandated by HIPAA for Level Two Compliance by the January 1, 2012 deadline,” said Cathy Sheppard, Chair, ASC X12. “The portal is an aide, and the most comprehensive resource tools are the TR3s, available at http://store.x12.org/hipaa.html.”
